The question, “where do you get your feather fans” is one I hear pretty frequently.

And I know with a couple of fan dancing courses on the horizon that some people might be keen to pick up a pair (or maybe put it on their holiday wish list!).

I honestly think it is cheaper to purchase a pair. But I do have a previous post on making your own fans if you are a crafty creature or have an abundance of feathers hanging around that you want to use up!

But if you are inept at anything creative like me, you might be looking for a quick thrill and just to purchase them.

So here are a couple of tips on buying fans online.

Check out the site’s overall reputability (baiscally it’s look and feel). You want to consider its text, the layout of the website and if it has secure payment optiosn and a returns policy. If you can’t find that information easily it might be a bit of a dud!
Buying on Etsy or Ebay? That can be a good option because you have some buyer protection. You can also check and read reviews from previous buyers to get a feel for the quality of the item vs the price.
Check the shipping! If you are in Australia know that this can push the price up. So do a quick check to avoid any shock on checking out.
Measure up! Fans usually have their sizes listed. Obviously the bigger the more expensive. For reference, while smaller a 21” x 38” set of fans will cover your torso. Because they are smaller they will also be lighter - something that anyone with wrist injuries or that is a beginner will find a godsend!
Feather layers. It’s worth noting that you also pay more for having multiple or single layers of feathers. If you can splurge, definitely getting a double or triple layer is visually worth it. But if it is your first pair or you are a complete beginner, you might want to go for a more affordable single layer. It is personal preference.
Buying from a craft seller or are the fans being custom made? Check the turn around - this is normally listed in the Seller information or in the description. I would suggest it is reasonable to expect a 2-4 week timeframe to get something made and out the door.
Allow a lot of shipping time. Especially with COVID , there can be delays in getting out items to you. So don’t expect a 10day turn around. You aren’t buying from David Jones.

In the market to purchase a pair? You can definitely do your own research. There are a couple of places that I have bought from in the past. But if you have a local Facebook or WhatsApp group for burlesque performers, it can be a good idea to ask around.

HOT FANS - I have picked up a few affordable pairs from this site. You can start with a smaller pair, like the 21 x 38” pairs for a good starter set.
FANCY FEATHER - Back in the day this used to be the only place to get your fans from. The quality is definitely bomb here.
HOUSE OF PRISCILLA - Want an Aussie seller? I haven’t bought here but I know people who have and you can get a good, beginner friendly pair. I’ve bought other stuff from the House of Priscilla and the service is always great.

If you are looking for the best deal, you can still keep an eye on Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or costume buy and sell groups on Facebook (just do a quick search, you will find a couple). Performers might be selling a pair that they have moved past and you can pick up something second hand. It is a waiting game there but I’ve seen really good fans sell for great prices simply because someone is moving house or is keen to see a newer performer be supported with an affordable costume item.
